Special Delivery

I briefly mentioned before that NYPD delivered a package to my front door from Amazon. Apparently they found the package on the street a few blocks away and decided to return it to its rightful owner. Imagine that. Two NYPD officers show up at your door, "Surprise! it's the NYPD and we're here to deliver your... book of poetry???"
Well, I am glad that they brought it back to me because it is a book of poetry by one of my favorite poets- Ella Wheeler Wilcox. I've been reading through it and though I'd share a few of my favorite poems here- some that I was already very familiar with and some that are new to me. Enjoy!

--------------------------------------
It is easy enough to be pleasant,
When life flows by like a song,
But the man worth while is one who will smile,
When everything goes dead wrong.
for the test of the heart is trouble,
And it always comes with the years,
And the smile that is worth the praises of earth
Is one that shines through tears.

It is easy enough to be prudent,
When nothing tempts you to stray,
When without or within no voice of sin
Is luring your soul away;
But it's only a negative virtue
Until it is tried by fire,
And the life that is worth the honor of earth
Is the one that resists the desire.

By the cynic, the sad, the fallen,
Who had no strength for the strife,
The world's highway is cumbered today;
They make up the sum of life.
But the virtue that conquers passion,
And the sorrow that hides in a smile, -
It is thee that are worth the homage of earth,
For we find them but once in a while.

“One ship drives east and another drives west
With the selfsame winds that blow.
Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales
Which tells us the way to go.
Like the winds of the seas are the ways of fate,
As we voyage along through the life:
Tis the set of a soul
That decides its goal,
And not the calm or the strife. ”
--------------------------------------------------------
There are two kinds of people on earth today,
Just two kinds of people, no more, I say.

Not the good and the bad, for 'tis well understood
The good are half bad and the bad are half good.

Not the happy and sad, for the swift-flying years
Brings each man his laughter and each man his tears.

Not the rich and the poor, for to count a man's wealth
You must first know the state of his conscience and health.

Not the humble and proud, for in life's busy span
He who puts on vain airs is not counted a man.

No! The two kinds of people on earth I mean
Are the people who lift and the people who lean.

Wherever you go you will find the world's masses
Are ever divided in just two classes.

And, strangely enough, you will find, too, I ween,
There is only one lifter to twenty who lean.

In which class are you? Are you easing the load
Of overtaxed lifters who toil down the road?

Or are you a leaner who lets others bear
Your portion of worry and labor and care?”
------------------------------------------------------
“There's one sad truth in life I've found
While journeying east and west -
The only folks we really wound
Are those we love the best.
We flatter those we scarcely know,
We please the fleeting guest,
And deal full many a thoughtless blow
To those who love us best.”

A Tale of Two Trains

Oh my... normally I love being able to take the subway to work. It is actually very efficient. I walk out of my apartment, over one block, and there I am. When I get out of the subway I walk 2 blocks and I'm at my office. I love it!
Yesterday, however, everything was thrown out of whack. I cursed the subway after yesterday's commute. I got on the B local train at my 86th street stop. I always have to take the local to begin with because the express train doesn't stop at my stop. When I got to 59th street, I had to get off the B because it doesn't go to my office, so I was hoping there would be an express A train there that I could just jump on to get to the office quickly. I saw the train as we pulled into the station and I was stoked... the stars were aligning for me! I got off the train and just as I was about to get over to the express, the doors closed... No big deal... there would surely be a local C train that I could hop on in just a minute. I wasn't too upset because catching that A train would have just been an added bonus. I could still get to work on time if I caught the C. Sure enough, the C train came about a minute later. I got on and squeezed toward the middle. I looked up just in time to see an A train pulling up to the station which would get me there about 5 minutes quicker. so I pushed my way off the train and ran over to the A... they closed the doors right as I got there. I turned around and saw that the C was just pulling away as well. I missed my shot. I had to wait for another 10 minutes for a train to come that I could take to work. I kept thinking about how stupid I was for getting off of the C train to catch the A train when I knew that there was a chance that I might not make it. So, I got off of a good train to catch a faster one and ended up missing them both. Insert your own life lesson here, but I thought a lot about that incident yesterday and how it is played out in so many ways in my life... I ended up being late to work when I would have been just fine had I taken the "slower" train that I didn't want to be on.
On a more interesting note, NYPD delivered a package from Amazon to my front door yesterday... Random! Only in NYC!
